Located on the banks of the Meenachil River is this idyllic riparian property in Kottayam. The approach to the plot is down a quiet lane shaded by full-grown trees. With a very specific floor plate in mind with regard to room sizes, as requested by the client, the plan evolved to maximize views of the river from all the rooms. Accordingly, the house took a linear form with the bedrooms on the one end, the main public areas in the middle, and the service areas located at the opposite end. A large sit out accessible from both the living and dining rooms projected out into the garden having closer proximity to the river. To keep within a vernacular milieu, the choice of material such as Athangudi tiles for the flooring, Mangalore roof tiles, and hardwood doors and windows achieved the desired effect. A gazebo placed on the edge of the property with access to the river provides a perfect spot for semi-outdoor living.
